April 27, 2008: Today Solomon, his friend Andrew and I took a little excursion to Dundas and Hamilton to see a couple of waterfalls.

On the way we stopped at the Texas Country Restaurant near Troy, Ontario for breakfast so the boys could try peameal with eggs.  Peameal is the local term for Canadian back bacon that is rolled in corn meal.  It is a lean pork loin and tastes great.  The boys were not too happy...they had figured it would be more like bacon instead of pork loin.  But they ate it all.  We were joined by a slew of motorcyclists and the place was packed by the time we left.

The Dundas/Hamilton area of Ontario is up on the Niagara Escarpment and the area has over 100 waterfalls.  We had plans to see three or four of these in the area, but some of the directions were confusing and we only made it to tow of them, but these were both excellent examples of the falls from the area and there was a lot of runoff still.  We made our way to the Spencer Gorge Conservation area near Dundas and followed the road to Tew's Falls.  Tew's Falls has a 135 foot plunge, just a few feet shorter than Niagara Falls in height.

Sol and Andrew at the edge of Tew's Falls; a 135 foot drop -- scary from the edge

Just around the corner from Tew's Falls is Webster Falls, another magnificent waterfall.  This one only drops 72 feet but is a broad curtain type of waterfall and was really beautiful.

You can see how big it is in the photo on the left as a person is standing at the overlook.

After these falls I had hoped to make it into Hamilton to see three or four others but we missed the turn so I decided to head straight on to Niagara Falls, about an hour away.  We parked up close and walked to the side of the Canadian Horseshoe Falls.  There are actually three different falls...American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls and Horseshoe Falls.  Horseshoe is by far the most magnificent and powerful.

A couple more closeup views of Horseshoe Falls

A portion of Horseshoe to the right and American in the distance on the left;  Crowds look in awe at the Falls

The view of Horseshoe Falls is best from Canada, but a third of it is in the US

(see map above - hashed line is the border)

Solomon checks out the Falls; Andrew and Sol hate getting their pictures taken

I check out the falls and LIKE my picture to be taken

Some views of the falls from up in the town: American through the daffodils and Horseshoe from up on the hill

On the way home, we did take a swing by the resort area of Niagara Falls on the Canada side.  Like any other resort, there are the Hard Rock Cafes, Ripley's Believe It or Nots, etc.  It really was a trip.

We ate at Pizza Pizza (NOT Little Caesar's!!) while a seagull looked on

In Canada, Little Caesar's cannot use the common "Pizza, Pizza" in their ads

There are giant Hershey's Kisses and Chocolate Bars....mmmm chocolate

There is a giant KingKong, a funny bird and a man-eating monster (see the guy in the monster's mouth?)

My favorites: The Burger Kingenstein and the giant T-Rex that looms over you on the street

Finally, the Hard Rock Cafe.  Oh, and almost forgot about the Moose in the urinal

Got to keep my moose collection going ya know!!
